Dropping the voice and speaking slowly is often enough to let a child know that you need his/her attention and that the matter is serious. In addition, I learned that using few words as possible was most effective. Over explanation was usually not needed and only diluted the purpose of my communication with a child. Finally, physical proximity to a child was another effective strategy. Shouting across a room or towering over a child rarely assisting me or the child in a situation.
